Velvet Hour
An intimate celebration suspended between East and West, at Toteme House in Montreal, where heritage is translated through sculpture, light and quiet luxury. It feels almost like a gallery installation where a wedding happened. It's intentional artistry. Every element is treated as a curated object: the invitation is a design piece, the table is an installation, the dresses become chapters in the story, the accessories carry personal symbolism, and the food is plated like sculpture.
Concept Statement | Inspired by the quiet beauty of intentional living, this celebration reimagines East Asian wedding traditions through a contemporary editorial lens. Sculptural drapery, warm pools of light, monochromatic textures and understated floral design create a setting that feels more like an art installation than a traditional reception. Rather than relying on abundance, every detail was curated with purpose — allowing heritage, architecture and human connection to become the true focal points of the celebration.
Stationery | The stationery becomes the first chapter of the celebration —introducing the dialogue between heritage and modernity through minimalist symbolism rather than overt tradition. The rich crimson palette nods to East Asian celebrations, while delicate calla lily illustrations—chosen for their personal significance to the couple—soften the suite with an organic, contemporary elegance. Gold foil details reference prosperity and joy, while abstract wave motifs evoke movement, continuity and the quiet flow of a shared life. Rather than recreating traditional motifs, the suite translates them into a refined, modern language.
Dresses | The wardrobe unfolds in three distinct chapters: quiet grace, cultural expression and bold celebration. Beginning with a sculptural ivory silhouette, transitioning into a contemporary qipao that honours the bride's heritage, and concluding with a dramatic gown inspired by the movement of the surrounding drapery, each look reflects the evolving atmosphere of the day while balancing modern refinement with meaningful tradition.
The wardrobe was conceived as a visual progression, mirroring the emotional rhythm of the celebration from quiet intimacy to expressive celebration. The day begins with understated elegance. A structured off-white gown with delicate silver accents embodies quiet grace, reflecting the soft morning light and their love. Clean lines and sculptural tailoring create a timeless silhouette that feels effortless yet refined.
As the celebration unfolds, the bride changes into a contemporary interpretation of the traditional qipao, embracing her cultural heritage with confidence and intention. Rich crimson and luminous gold introduce warmth and symbolism, honouring Chinese traditions while remaining undeniably modern.
For the final chapter, fashion becomes a statement of personality. A dramatic silhouette echoes the flowing architectural drapery found throughout the space, bringing movement, softness and bold femininity to the evening. The look reflects the couple themselves—quiet in presence yet expressive in spirit—bringing the editorial to a powerful and memorable close.
« The wardrobe evolves alongside the celebration — moving from quiet elegance to cultural expression and finally to bold, sculptural romance, each look revealing a new layer of the bride’s story. »
The Bride - Beauty | The beauty direction was intentionally understated, allowing the bride's natural features to become part of the wedding's quiet elegance. Soft bronzed tones echo the warm golden light that fills the space, creating a luminous complexion that subtly references the symbolism of gold within East Asian culture—prosperity, joy and celebration.
Authentic Lily Calla
The bride's calla lily tattoo is much more than a styling element—they're authentic to her. Rather than hiding them, we embrace them as part of their narrative. That gives the story a sense of honesty that aligns beautifully with the rest of the vision. Likewise, the repetition of the calla lily across the stationery, jewellery and tattoos creates a subtle visual thread that ties the entire editorial together without ever feeling forced.
Groom’s look | The groom's look embraces contemporary tailoring with balanced sophistication. A sharply tailored black suit is softened by ivory accents, including the tie and pocket square, offering a subtle homage to his traditional Southeast Asian heritage. Rather than replicating convention, these details reinterpret cultural heritage through a modern lens, creating a look that feels both timeless and deeply personal.
The styling is intentionally minimal—allowing impeccable tailoring, thoughtful textures and meaningful details to take precedence. Together, the groom's attire complements the celebration's architectural aesthetic while reflecting the quiet confidence that defines the couple. Just as the celebration reimagines tradition through contemporary design, the groom's attire honours his Filipino heritage with quiet restraint—allowing modern tailoring and subtle ivory details to speak with elegance rather than excess.
Jewelry | Meaningful accessories continue this narrative. Sculptural silver calla lily jewellery pays tribute to a flower deeply connected to the couple's personal story, while a delicate gold leaf accessory offers a contemporary interpretation of traditional symbolism. Even the bride's tattoos become part of the visual language; featuring calla lilies and symbols of love, they blur the line between personal identity and intentional design, transforming the body itself into an extension of the celebration's story.
Art direction / Studio / Tablescape | Rather than centering the table within the room, the room is built around the table. The flowing ivory drapery creates intimacy and movement, while the illuminated center line acts almost like a ceremonial pathway, drawing the eye through the space. Understated florals, sculptural silverware and warm amber lighting replace abundance with intention, allowing every element to breathe. The composition feels immersive yet restrained—more like a gallery installation than a traditional reception.
Light as cultural symbolism - Throughout their special day, light becomes a recurring motif—appearing as a suspended lantern, a glowing orb and the illuminated spine of the dining table. It quietly references both the sun and moon, symbolizing balance, continuity and the meeting of two lives. A suspended lantern acts as both sculptural focal point and subtle tribute to the couple's cultural roots, casting a warm glow that echoes themes of home, celebration and continuity. The recurring glowing sphere (lantern/moon/sun) feels intentional.
Draping | "draping the heart of a dynamic quiet couple" Soft architectural drapery reflects the couple themselves—gentle yet expressive, creating movement without overwhelming the space. It wraps the celebration in warmth, becoming both backdrop and emotional framework.
Tablescape | Inspired by the couple's love of shared experiences, the table was designed to encourage lingering conversations, meaningful moments and a slower way of celebrating. Inspired by contemporary architecture and subtly informed by Asian aesthetics, each element embraces minimalism, allowing texture, proportion and light to take centre stage.
Designed as a living installation rather than a traditional reception table, the tablescape celebrates the art of gathering—where sculptural forms, warm light and subtle cultural references transform dining into an intimate expression of connection. Rather than decorating the table, every detail was curated to foster connection. The result is an intimate gathering where humanity is expressed through thoughtful design—where every place setting, every material and every gesture contributes to a shared experience that feels both deeply personal and quietly elevated.
Catering | Food becomes another artistic element, as the couple loves restaurants, within the celebration. Minimalist presentations, organic compositions and sculptural forms echo the architectural rhythm of the tablescape, while polished silver serveware and refined plating subtly reference contemporary Asian fine dining. Designed with intention, each course transforms the act of sharing a meal into an immersive sensory experience.
This intimate micro-wedding explores the intersection of contemporary design and cultural heritage, where modern minimalism is softened by warmth, symbolism and human connection. Neutral drapery, sculptural forms and carefully considered lighting create an immersive atmosphere that celebrates restraint over excess. Traditional East Asian elements—including a modern qipao, meaningful heirloom-inspired details and a refined palette of crimson, ivory and gold—are woven seamlessly into an intentional setting that feels timeless, artistic and deeply personal. Every moment invites us to slow down, discovering beauty in texture, shadow and quiet moments shared around the table.

Many modern minimalist weddings lean toward an all-white, Scandinavian aesthetic. What distinguishes this story is its balance of restraint with cultural richness. The restrained palette, sculptural styling, cinematic lighting, and subtle Chinese influences create a narrative that feels contemporary without losing its sense of heritage. That tension between modernity and tradition gives the editorial its strongest voice—and is exactly the kind of thoughtful storytelling that publications like The Lane tend to favor. Honoring the cultural storytelling that gives every tradition its depth and richness.

Every design decision was guided by the idea that luxury can be expressed through restraint. Rather than layering decorative elements, the celebration relies on sculptural drapery, warm architectural lighting, tactile materials and meaningful symbolism to create emotion. Cultural references appear as quiet gestures—crimson tones, gold accents, calla lilies and the soft glow of a lantern—allowing heritage to feel seamlessly woven into a modern editorial narrative. The result is a celebration that feels less like a styled wedding and more like an immersive work of art, where intimacy, architecture and symbolism exist in perfect balance.
